Seminar on 80 years of WMC and five yearly meeting of
General Council held at Colombo, Sri Lanka

The Five Yearly General Council Meeting and the Annual Executive Committee Meeting of the World Muslim Congress were held in Colombo, capital of Sri Lanka, on the 18th and 19th of June 2007 under the Chairmanship of Excellency Dr. Abdullah Omar Nasseef, President World Muslim Congress (Motamar AI-Alam Al-Islami). The meetings were hosted by the Sri Lanka Islamic Centre headed by Excellency Mohamed Hanifa Mohamed Chairman, Sri Lanka Islamic Centre, Member of Parliament, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Government of the Democratic Republic of Sri Lanka.

The proceedings started with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Mr. M.H. Fauzul Alavi. The delegates were then welcomed by Honourable M.H. Mohamed, MP and Minister for Parliament Affairs and Senior Vice President of World Muslim League and the Chairman, Sri Lanka Islamic Centre.

Message of H.E. Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, was read by Mr. A. H. M. Azwar, Member of Parliament and Presidential Adviser. President Rajapaksa noted in his message that the Muslims of Sri Lanka had contributed much towards the growth and development of the country and history shows that they had lived in harmony with all other communities.

After that, the message from the Secretary General, OIC, was read by Mir Nawaz Khan Marwat, Assistant Secretary General, WMC.

The gathering was addressed by the leaders of Buddhist, Christian, Hindu faiths. Moulvi Niaz Mohammad, a Muslim Scholar, also made a speech. Honourable Professor G.L. Peiris, Minister of Development Government of Sri Lanka and Honourable Rohitta Bogolla Gama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Government of Sri Lanka, then addressed the meetings. The latter eulogized the historic services of the Motamar.

In their speeches the President of Motamar Dr Abdullah Omar Nasseef and the Secretary General Raja Muhammad Zafarul Haq emphasized the need for interfaith dialogue, mutual respect and tolerance to save the world from growing tensions, bloodshed and violations of fundamental human rights. They also emphasized the fact that these are defining moments in human history where humanity has to decide either to adopt the course of clash and mutual destruction or the human race adopts a civilized behaviour of mutual accommodation and works together for peace and progress.

At the 19th June Meeting, speeches were made emphasizing the role played by Motamar during the last 80 years in the service of Islam, Muslims and in bringing together the entire humanity as the family of the Creator. It was resolved to strive for justice for the oppressed and development of women and younger generations. It was also resolved to continue the journey with greater force in the future.

The issues of Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Muslim minorities and the global situation were discussed. The impact of globalization on Muslim societies was also thoroughly discussed and resolutions were passed.

 Elections
In the evening session on 19th June, elections of office-bearers of the World Muslim Congress were held for next 5 years and following were re-elected unanimously:

It gives me pleasure to send this message of felicitation on the occasion of the Seminar on the theme "Muslims and their cooperation with other faiths", being held in Colombo.

I appreciate the decision of the World Muslim Congress to celebrate its 80"1 anniversary in Sri Lanka marked by this Seminar being organized in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Islamic Centre.

The World Muslim Congress was inaugurated under the able guidance of its first President His Majesty Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz of the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I am glad to note that Sri Lanka has enjoyed a very cordial relationship with the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for many decades.

It is worthy of mention that the Muslims of Sri Lanka have contributed much towards the growth and development of Sri Lanka, and history shows they have lived here in harmony with all other communities.

It is also my pleasure to welcome the current President of the World Muslim Congress Dr. Abdullah Bin Omar Nasseef, its Secretary-General Dr. Raja Zafarul Haq, and all foreign delegates to this Seminar.

On the recommendation of the Secretary General, WMC, the President His Excellency Abdullah Omar Nasseef approved t appointments of the following two as Assistant Secretary General:

1. Dr. Hamid Bin Ahmad Al Rafaie Assistant Secretary General, WMC. Jeddah.
2. Raja Muhammad Zafar-ul-Haq, Secretary General.

The meeting concluded with prayers by Prof. Sheikh Mohammed H. AI-Mujaddadi from Afghanistan.
