OIC Council of Foreign Ministers explore areas of Islamic Cooperation

The 41st Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the OIC was held in Jeddah (KSA) from 18-19 June 2014 with the theme “Exploring Areas of Islamic Cooperation”. It was held at a time when the Muslim world is facing huge political, economic, social challenges. The session was presided over by Prince Saud Al-Faisal, the longest serving Foreign Minister, not only in the Islamic World but even the rest of the world.

The Secretary General of OIC Excellency Ayad Ameen Madni presented his Report on Activities and Developments in various Regions, directly or indirectly affecting Muslim countries and societies. After two days of discussions, in which behind-the scene consultations played a major role in bringing down the tempers which could spoil the atmosphere, the proceedings went smoothly and without any feared tensions.

The Conference renewed its commitment to the objectives and principles of the Charter of the OIC to coordinate the joint efforts in order to address all challenges and threats facing Islamic countries and the need to strengthen the bonds of humanity and solidarity amongst them.

It also re-affirmed the central role of OIC in promoting Islamic solidarity in accordance with the Charter and the 10 Years Programme of Action.

The Conference also decide to raise the level of its effectiveness and supported the efforts of the Secretary General towards continuing the process of its re-structuring and developing its systems in all fields in order to augment its capabilities and impact, within and outside the Muslim world.

The Conference reiterated that the cause of Palestinian and Al-Qudus Al-Sharif is the central issue of The Islamic Ummah and held Israeli, the occupying power, responsible for the stoppage of the peace process through its continued policy of building new settlement and blockading and adjudication of Al-Qudus Al-Sharif issue.

The Conference affirmed its ABSOLUTE REJECTION OF RECOGNIZING ISRAELI, AS A JEWISH STATE, and called upon the international community to urgently achieve a just and comprehensive peace based on ending Israeli occupation of Arab and Palestinian lands since 1967 and establish the sovereignty of Palestinian independent State on the borders of 4th June, 1967 with Al-Qudus Al-Sharif as its capital.

The Conference welcomed the Palestinian National Reconciliation Agreement, which has resulted in the formation of a national Palestinian government.

The Conference supported a political solution based on Geneva I Communiqué and urged all parties to apply pressure on the Syrian regime to engage constructively, in the democratic transformation of the country.

It also called upon the regime in Syria to implement Security Resolution 2139 which called for the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Syrian civilians without hindrance.

The Conference expressed its deep concern about the developments in Libya and called upon all Libyan parties to enter into a comprehensive and exclusive national dialogue for a compromise solution to end the crisis in the State of Libya.

It also demanded an immediate end to all forms of violence against Muslims in Central Africa, and expressed its total support to the Special Envoy of the OIC in Central Africa in bringing end to the violent conflict.

The Conference expressed its support for the peoples of Jammu and Kashmir, Turkish Cyprus, Kosovo and Afghanistan in their struggle for the attainment of their basic human rights, security and development.

The Conference re-affirmed its condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

It also condemned the violent activities of extremist Boko Haram Group and re-affirmed its unwavering solidarity and support to the people and Government of Nigeria.

The Conference re-affirmed its complete rejection of all forms of fanaticism, extremism and called for the consolidation of the authentic Islamic values of moderate, openness, tolerance, dialogue and diversity.

It also called for an end to continued violence and discrimination against Rohingya Muslims community in Myanmar and expressed support for the appointment of a Special Convoy to Myanmar.

The Conference called for continued efforts to advance and promote human rights in the Member States.

Mr. Sartaj Aziz, Adviser Foreign Affairs to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, represented Pakistan and effectively presented Pakistan’s view point during the Conference. He successfully organized the meeting of the Contact Group on the issue of Kashmir.

The Conference re-affirmed the resolutions of the OIC inviting Member States to sign and ratify all current Trade and Economic agreements concluded in the frame-work of OIC in promoting economic and trade relations among Member States.

The Conference re-affirmed the need to adopt ways and means to expand and develop middle and small scale enterprises in Member States including the programmes run by the Islamic Development Bank Group.

The Conference decided to accept the offer of the State of Kuwait to host the 42nd Session of the OIC Foreign Ministers’ in Kuwait.
